president bush was already on the ropes against bill clinton when casper wine berger, former president ronald reagan's defense secretary, was implicated in the iran contra scandal shortly before election day. bad news that bush did not need. in 2004, a classic october surprise. osama bin laden released a video of october 29th, four days before election day, in a razor thin race between bush and kerry. three years after 9/11, itted as a reminder of the e terrorist threat. more recently, the term october surprise has come to mean a seismic event in the fall of an election year. though most have centered around foreign policy, others have been about the economy like in 2008. when the economy imploded, john mccain's advisers say his campaign collapsed along with it and never recovered. historians say in order for an october surprise to have a real 11th hour impact, it has the feed into a narrative that exists. whether it's carter's ineffectiveness or questions about mccain's credentials on the economy. >> it's not so much this eureka, this is so surprising and amazing, but rather, people n

as bill clinton, all they're suggesting now when asked about this and he's the best, he made the comment, he said, what they're proposing is bush economic policies on steroids. that's what this is. >> on the flip side, ben, you have the mitt romney secretly taped comments, the 47%, what does he do? what does he need to do to overcome this perception, he's this rich guy out to help the rich? >> first of all, we had lots of very rich presidents who have been helpful. fdr was one of the richest men in the country. his family ate off gold plates. john f. kennedy was one of the very richest people in america. he was a very fine president. the fact that lbj was fantastically rich, a fine president. the fact that they're rich doesn't mean they're bad presidents. not in the slightest. i think mr. romney has to do is go to some kind of chart or something out of his head where he says, we're going to do x, that will give us 700,000 to 900,000 jobs. we're going to do y, that will give us 1.2 million jobs and he's got to run through this and explain why and exactly it is different, a, from what mr.

a point that bill clinton made rather effectively in his speech to the democratic convention. they argue that they devote savings to reforming medicare, not funding new entitlements. that is an important difference. both parties agree that controls are needed on medicare spending. but they disagree about the best path for. -- forward. this claim by the republicans, i give it to pinocchios. obama will claim that are ryan's plan for medicare will for seniors to pay $6,400 more a year to make up for cuts in the program. this is an old democratic attack that has been around for a while. the problem is it is based on an earlier version of ryan's plan. that is another thing i have given two pinocchios. people should always be aware of dire predictions far off in the future. the $6,400 figure refers to an analysis of cbo estimates of a different, less generous ryan plan that goes to the year 2022. they make no estimates of the new version, except to say that beneficiaries might face higher costs. the plan was changed in other ways too. it changed the option of traditional medicare. i

support has diminished since bill clinton was in august and was making the case for it. you contrast columbine when there was enormous white house focus and national conversation after those shootings to what happened here where there is the silence. democrats in particular have been intimidated on this issue by a misconception that there is an overwhelming majority against it. the country is closely divided. but the half of the country voting for democrats, they are still interested in gun control and there could be a different discussion than we're having. >> so i remember after the shooting many people had this conversation about, it's too early to talk about, you know, gun control, you're politicizing what has been a horrible tragedy. i'll play a, a, i think we have, it must have been a radio interview with colorado governor and he said do we need stricter laws, we should wait until we bury those who we have lost. do you think that's true? as a victim i think your voice would be the most powerful in that debate. >> right, of course. you know, we -- i really think it'
